Shady Side MD ultrasound tech with female patientNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Shady Side MD, the next step is to start the procedure of choosing a school. First, you have to find the right program that will furnish the proper training to become a qualified professional. And given that some states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each program in order to assess and compare your choices. But just where does one begin? Many potential students will begin by searching for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location need to be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other critical factors also. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and other qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training programs that are available.

Sonographer Work Summary

ultrasound equipment in Shady Side MDThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Shady Side MD hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Sonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Shady Side MD clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Maryland or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Shady Side MD area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Shady Side MD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Shady Side MD clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Shady Side medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Shady Side MD residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Shady Side MD area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

woman attending ultrasound technician school online in Shady Side MDAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Shady Side MD outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Shady Side home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.
